EU and US emissions have diminished mostly from switching electricity production from coal to natural gas, as natural gas emits about half of the CO2 emissions than coal for the same energy generation.
A Few Details
US natural gas supply comes from “fracking” technology to extract shale gas.
EU natural gas supply comes from imports from Russia, Norway and other countries.
In the meantime, China or India did ramp up their consumption of fossil fuels, erasing all gains from the US or the EU.
